VIKA provided surveying, civil engineering, and arboricultural services for the expansion of the Upper and Lower Schools, central plant, athletic fields, and tennis courts.

Our International Society of Arboriculture-certified arborist services focused on selective clearing and tree preservation with demolition and redevelopment/enlargement of campus facilities. The scope of our arborist services included:

  • A tree inventory
  • Condition rating analysis for tree preservation determination,
  • Oversight of the on-site implementation by the Contractor of tree preservation plan
  • Oversight of the transplantion of existing plant material
  • Development of construction/tree preservation reports as required through full construction phase for 90 acres and 141 trees.

In addition, VIKA did a final minor site plan that included grading areas, tree preservation techniques, and storm drainage systems for stream stabilization and surveying and civil engineering services for the completion of a watershed-wide study and stream assessment for the area draining to stream below the existing wet pond.

Services were provided simultaneously with the Resource Protection Area (RPA) delineation.  This three-phase project included: Phase I Stream Assessment; Phase II Final Stream Alignment/Modeling; and, Phase III Alternate Existing Pond Re-Design.

VIKA won the 2010 Fairfax County Land Conservation Award for both the Tree Planting and Tree Preservation categories for our work on the Lower School Expansion. These awards honor developers, designers, superintendents, and contractors whose projects best demonstrate excellence in erosion and sediment control, site design and implementation, and/or commitment to tree preservation and replacement in Fairfax County.  This project also won the 2009 NAIOP Northern Virginia  Award for Excellence—Best Building, Institutional Facility Under $20 Million and was awarded an Honorable Mention Award for Design Excellence in the 2011 Fairfax County Exceptional Design Awards Program.
