Sidwell Friends School

VIKA provided Civil Engineering and Surveying services to the prestigious Sidwell Friends for over 14 years on a variety of projects.

Some of these projects include the school’s master plan and the award-winning Middle School renovation and 39,000 SF addition on its Washington DC campus.

The master plan for the school focuses on meeting programmatic needs for its two campuses, including integrating them through feasible landscapes and enhanced pedestrian circulation. The renovation and addition to the Middle School transformed the original 55-year-old, 33,000 SF, facility into a state-of-the-art 3-story, 72,000 SF sustainable teaching environment.

Systems such as stormwater management, waste-water recycling, and solar electricity generation, typically hidden from users, are exposed. This allows students to observe and quantify their inter relationship with natural resources, local habitat and the built environment resulting in the first LEED Platinum-rated K-12 school building in the country and the first LEED Platinum-rated building in Washington, DC.
